HyEng Corp established for the joint development of zero-emission shipsThree of Japan’s leading marine engine manufacturers — Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, Yanmar Power Technology Co Ltd, and Japan Engine Corporation — have concluded a joint-venture contract for combined investment and announced the joint establishment of a new company, HyEng Corp.

With a view to contributing to decarbonisation in Japan, and promoting development of the shipbuilding and maritime industry, the three companies have completed an agreement to facilitate joint investment in establishing the new company, which will pursue the development of ‘world-leading marine hydrogen-fuelled engines’. This announcement was shared at the Zero Emission Ships seminar held by the Nippon Foundation in May 2021.

With the establishment of HyEng Corp, the three companies will further advance their joint development activities and accelerate their drive to develop new markets for decarbonisation in the marine domain.

Seiji Shindo is the president of HyEng Corp, which is based in Akashi City (Hyogo Prefecture) on the site of Japan Engine Corp’s headquarters factory. The company’s stated aims are: the development of hydrogen engine technology; the development of international standards and rules for hydrogen fuel supply systems; the integration of hydrogen fuel supply systems; and the maintenance and operation of hydrogen fuel engine demonstration facilities.
