Sciaky announces new AM machine — the EBAM-53

Sciaky announces new AM machine — the EBAM-53Sciaky Inc, a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries and a leading provider of electron beam welding systems and metal 3-D printing solutions, has launched the new EBAM-53 — a machine for ‘laboratory and research facilities’. This new product is targeted at users that need to do research on a smaller scale prior to progressing to a larger, traditional Sciaky EBAM system. The EBAM-53 will be available from January 2024.

Sciaky said: “The EBAM-53 is the ideal platform for materials research in laboratory settings. This system has a smaller space requirement and a lower cost but features all the same electron beam additive manufacturing equipment as the larger-scale EBAM systems and can be applied for process optimisation and materials development. The new system will use the same electron beam generator, as well as the same sensors, computers, and process control software, making user-research directly scalable into the larger production-ready EBAM models.

“The EBAM-53, which will fit into laboratory and R&D settings with ease and install in one piece, features a build envelope of 635mm cubed; and like all previously delivered EBAM systems, this new one will feature the IRISS process control software. Rotary and tilt positioners are available as options.”

Scott Phillips, Sciaky’s president, added: “This machine has been a goal of Sciaky for years. We have been asked numerous times to offer a system appropriate for a research environment, and we can now answer this part of the industry’s demand. With the EBAM-53, users can conduct meaningful research and development that can easily migrate to larger production-scale systems in the future.”

Starting with a 3-D model from a CAD program, Sciaky’s fully articulated, moving electron beam gun deposits metal — via wire feedstock — layer by layer until the part is built and ready for finish machining. Deposition rates typically range from 3 to 9kg/hr, depending upon part geometry and the material selected.
