London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) yesterday hosted Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, at its ‘state of the art’ factory in Ansty, Coventry. With an investment of over £1 billion from the Geely Holding Group since 2014, Ansty was the UK’s first dedicated manufacturing plant for electric vehicles (EVs). Since 2018, more than 10,000 purpose-built TX electric taxis have rolled off the production line and sold around the world.
Chris Allen, LEVC managing director, said: “I was pleased to host the Mayor of West Midlands, Richard Parker, at our ‘state of the art’ manufacturing facility in Ansty. With the support of Geely, £1 billion has been invested since 2014, resulting in our remarkable plant and our purpose-built, electrically driven TX taxi; the optimum solution for drivers and businesses looking to transition to ‘green’ mobility. I look forward to working closely with Richard and his team to ensure there is continued support for the iconic taxi trade in the UK and the creation of a stable regulatory and incentive-based landscape to safeguard future investment opportunities here in the Midlands.”
Mr Parker said:“Touring the TX black cab production line was fantastic. These pioneering electric taxis, made right here in our region, will be shipped worldwide. LEVC has exciting future plans, and we discussed how to support their growth, job creation, and continued success. It is through companies like LEVC that the West Midlands has rightly earned a reputation as a centre of innovation in ‘green’ technology and advanced manufacturing and by backing this sector we can create more high-quality jobs and deliver the economic growth our region needs.”
World’s most advanced electric taxiHelping to improve urban air quality and directly supporting the decarbonisation of transport networks, LEVC’s TX has prevented more than 200,000 tonnes of CO
2 from entering the atmosphere. It is also the world’s most advanced electric taxi, an accessible and inclusive vehicle for all, regardless of age or disability.
Featuring flexible space for up to six passengers, the vehicle includes an integrated wheelchair ramp enabling the TX to accommodate a forward-facing wheelchair – the only taxi of its kind to do so. The TX’s eCity technology provides a pure EV range of 78 miles and a total range-extended capacity of 333 miles, making it ideally suited to all cab drivers, particularly London’s busy black cab drivers.
LEVC recently announced its new strategy that will see it grow beyond manufacturing the TX, to become a leading zero-carbon mobility technology company. Building on its unrivalled heritage in producing the iconic London black cab, the company is adapting its business to meet the rapidly accelerating demand for spacious, flexible EVs, with an all-new range of vehicles based on a highly flexible, space-focused, pure EV platform technology called Space Oriented Architecture (SOA), developed with Geely.
