ADS-TEC Energy plc has unveiled plans for one of the world’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS), to be located in southern Germany. The facility is designed to deliver 1GW of output with a storage capacity of approximately 2GWh, a scale that positions it as a cornerstone for future energy infrastructure in Europe. The development marks a major milestone for the company, which has built its reputation on advanced lithium-ion storage technologies and fast-charging systems.
The project, which began development nine months ago, has already secured unanimous approval from the local city council and received a positive grid connection assessment from the transmission system operator. Once operational, the BESS will be capable of covering the daily electricity needs of around 250,000 single-family homes. Commissioning is scheduled for 2029, with project development and financing expected to be finalised by mid-2026, pending regulatory approval.
ADS-TEC Energy will manage the entire lifecycle of the project, from planning and financing to implementation, operation and maintenance. The company brings more than 15 years of experience in lithium-ion storage and has successfully delivered frequency regulation plants connected to the grid for over a decade.
Flagship projectThomas Speidel, ADS-TEC Energy’s CEO and founder, said: “This project represents a turning point for our company. Beyond implementing one of the world’s largest BESS projects, we are laying the groundwork for an energy system that unites security of supply with sustainability. With extensive experience, a highly capable team, and the right partners, we are exceptionally well-prepared to seize this opportunity. This is an incredible flagship project for critical infrastructure, developed and operated by ADS-TEC Energy.”
The facility will also incorporate large-scale solar panel installations with double-digit megawatt peak (MWp) capacity for on-site consumption. This integration of photovoltaics is expected to enhance both the sustainability and economic performance of the project.
From a commercial perspective, ADS-TEC Energy anticipates substantial revenue generation. Based on 2024 market data, a comparable storage facility would have generated revenues exceeding 230 million euros annually, driven by participation in the European wholesale energy market, the capacity market, and various physical grid services. The company believes this underscores the attractive yield potential of the project and its strategic importance in supporting Europe’s energy transition.
