Total Group targets £100 million growth amid building boom

One of the UK’s leading manufacturers of sustainable steel reinforcement and building products has outlined a three-year growth plan to make the most of the infrastructure boom in the UK. Total Group, which comprises Total Construction Supplies (Processing) and Reinforcement Solutions, is looking to quadruple revenues to £100 million after putting itself in a prime position to support projects in the construction, housing, transport and nuclear sectors.

The Midlands-based company has invested heavily in creating more than 500,000ft² of internal and external world-class manufacturing space across four sites, capable of producing cut and rebent rebars, standard reinforcement bars, meshes, column and piling cages and prefabricated structural elements.

Significant investment in its 130-strong workforce and the development of a new apprenticeship programme will give it access to the next generation of talent, while a wide-reaching sustainability initiative has seen it reduce its carbon footprint to below 500kg annually for the first time in its 27-year history.

Could quadruple revenues
“Everything we have done in the past three years — from strengthening the senior management team to the opening of our £4 million site in Cannock — has been completed to give us the foundations to target these new infrastructure opportunities and we believe we could quadruple revenues between now and the end of 2028.

“We have a track record of delivering large, reinforced and prefabricated products for use in a nuclear submarine base, the Thames Tideway project, Bromford Tunnels on HS2 and at Hinkley Point. All delivered on time, within budget and sustainably, with health and safety a number one focus. This makes us a trusted option for future works that are currently ramping up, and when you combine this with our manufacturing capacity and commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, we believe there is a £100-million-plus strong pipeline of projects we could deliver.”

Total Group, which has sites in Bilston, Wolverhampton, Cannock and Ilkeston in the East Midlands, provide a full suite of sustainable reinforcement solutions designed to support large scale slabs, heavy loads and high traffic infrastructure typically found in warehouses, production plants and logistics hubs.

High-tech finishing facilities
Production capabilities provide the opportunity for both high-volume and bespoke pre-cast products, all delivering strength, consistency, dimensional accuracy and, thanks to high-tech finishing facilities, able to operate in some of the world’s most demanding environments.

Ongoing investment will continue to upgrade all sites to support precast customers in the housing market, while manufacturing space will be optimised to free up additional capacity for future infrastructure projects and to continue to provide unique services, such as offering rebars, cut and bent, from 8 to 50mm in 98% recycled material.

Matthew Hague, who founded the group in 1998 with chief operating officer Craig Gibbons, added: “There is no reason why we cannot produce 1,000 tonnes of product every month, which would move us towards £100 million annual revenues and potentially create in excess of 75 new jobs. We have seen with recent global news how important it is for the UK to be responsible for its own infrastructure and having access to a supply chain that can deliver the scale and complexity of these projects on time and to budget — this is where we come in.”

Total Group holds the ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 140001 (environment), ISO 45001 (health and safety) and BES 6001 (responsible sourcing) accreditations, while all steel used in the manufacture of products is fully traceable and responsibly sourced from CARES-accredited (Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels) steel suppliers. Through ongoing training and a series of environmental initiatives, the company is planning to halve its carbon emissions by 2028.
