Mapal has introduced a new cooling technology for its UNIQ hydraulic chuck range that promises to take process reliability and machining performance to the next level. The DirectCool option delivers precise cooling directly along the tool shaft to the cutting edge through three cooling channel bores.
The UNIQ range of hydraulic chucks was first launched in 2020 and has since been expanded to include UNIQ DReaM chucks for boring and reaming and UNIQ Mill chucks for milling operations. The addition of DirectCool marks a significant step forward in hydraulic clamping technology, offering improved temperature distribution, reduced wear and thermal distortion, and extended tool life. The flushing effect also enhances process reliability and surface quality by removing chips effectively, preventing tool breakage in demanding operations such as boring.
DirectCool integration does not alter tool restrictions, meaning existing processes can continue without adjustment. The system is cost-effective and flexible, as it does not require expensive shank grooves and works with standard tools or tools without internal cooling.
UNIQ DirectCool has already shown strong results in stainless steel and aluminium machining. For the market launch, the option is available for UNIQ Mill chucks, HA and UNIQ DReaM chucks with 4.5deg outer geometry in diameters from 6 to 32mm.
Dr Jochen Schmidt, head of clamping technology at Mapal, said: “DirectCool represents a major advance in hydraulic chuck technology. By delivering cooling precisely where it is needed, we are helping manufacturers achieve consistent quality, longer tool life and greater process reliability. This innovation reflects Mapal’s commitment to providing practical, high-performance solutions for modern machining challenges.”
The UNIQ hydraulic chucks feature an identical outer geometry to shrink chucks but can be distinguished by their glossy surface and blue screw in the HSK collar. Highly durable and corrosion-resistant, the chucks have earned Mapal several design awards.
