Compact, energy-efficient and easy to access for maintenance, a new vertical bandsawing machine has been introduced by German manufacturer,
Kasto, whose UK and Ireland subsidiary is in Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire.
The heavy-duty, high-performance KASTOssb features an electromechanical saw feed, which replaces the former hydraulic actuation. The use of servomotors reduces power consumption and noise during operation.
The KASTOssb is available in two versions: the AC 2.6, which can be used as a stand-alone unit or with a roller conveyor; and the FC 2.6, which features automated material loading together with infeed and outfeed capabilities. The latter version can be expanded with KASTOsort for automated robotic handling and integration with storage systems. These options offer a compact and scalable automation platform, making it suitable for mid-sized companies.
The latest Kasto ProControl enhances operational efficiency, intuitiveness and data transparency. It has a dashboard showing live machine status, as well as a Simple Mode for novice users, both designed to assist with daily tasks. The material library, cutting plan and intelligent cutting optimisation save both time and material. Additionally, diagnostic and analysis tools help pinpoint faults quickly, reducing downtime.
The chip conveyor is also new. It may be installed on either the right or left side, allowing the customer to specify the preferred discharge direction when placing an order. This provides greater flexibility when integrating the conveyor into existing production sites. Its upward-conveying design minimises the risk of blockages, complies with current safety standards and reduces coolant carryover. Discharge heights of 600mm or 1,050mm are available.
Partitioned panels and hinged rear doors offer easy access to the bandsaw blade for replacement and to other key components for servicing, while allowing for more space-efficient installation. A new front inspection window provides a clear view of the working area, roller conveyor and material infeed.

The new programming system improves stock positioning and cutting precision. Tests carried out by Kasto on bandsaws equipped with ProControl have demonstrated exceptional consistency in cutting length.
In a series of measurements performed on a KASTOssb FC 2.6, using C45 round bar stock of 90mm diameter and a target cut length of 10mm, the average length achieved was 10.011mm, with a standard deviation of 0.048mm. These precise, reproducible cut lengths allow smaller cutting allowances, leading to savings in both material and time during downstream processing operations.
A significant factor contributing to high cutting quality and productivity is effective vibration management. Consequently, a proven core element of the KASTOssb series that remains unchanged is the mineral cast saw head. It is particularly advantageous when bundle cutting, as well as when using carbide bandsaw blades, which are now explicitly included in the range of applications. Furthermore, there is an option to use a 34mm wide band.
The KASTOssb can be seamlessly integrated into an automated, compact sawing centre, the KASTOcenter. The modular arrangement combines a tower storage unit, robotic loading and unloading, sawing and downstream machining. Together, these features create a system capable of 24/7 operation within a minimal footprint.
Reliable unattended running is ensured by KASTOrespond feed control, which is included as standard. It automatically detects the forces acting on the blade and adjusts cutting parameters to suit each sawing application, helping to ensure safe operation and to optimise cutting times.
