Lines of sight in narrow aisles: the sensors monitor the rack and detect protruding loadsHUBTEX multidirectional sideloaders are widely used in warehouses where space optimisation is critical. These vehicles often operate within guidance systems with less than 100mm of clearance on each side. While this maximises storage capacity, it severely limits driver visibility. The risk becomes particularly acute when long items are stored at an angle or when neighbouring loads shift during retrieval. Protruding parts are not always visible from the cabin, especially on the engine side, leading to potential contact and costly damage to the chassis, battery, cabin or racking. In industries such as timber, metal and general manufacturing, where hundreds of moves occur daily, this scenario is common.
To mitigate these risks, HUBTEX has introduced ‘Clear Aisle Assist’, which monitors vertical danger zones along the rack systems and reacts automatically if needed. The system uses Lidar sensors to scan vertical planes in the vehicle’s environment, mounted at strategic positions based on the truck’s configuration. It monitors both forward and reverse movements, ensuring early detection of protruding loads regardless of the direction of travel. The monitored area dynamically adjusts according to speed, lift height and configuration, providing precise detection without adding extra tasks for the driver.
Michael Röbig, head of product management at HUBTEX, said: “Our aim was to develop an assistance system that actively supports the driver without adding extra burden. The Clear Aisle Assist recognises dangerous situations early and can, if needed, not only warn but also automatically reduce the vehicle’s speed.”
The system supplements existing personnel protection scanners by focusing on collision prevention with goods protruding into the aisle. If an obstacle is detected, the system first issues a warning and, if necessary, automatically reduces speed to avoid contact or minimise damage. This approach enhances driver concentration while maintaining material flow in tight warehouse layouts.
Clear Aisle Assist is now available for HUBTEX’s Phoenix series and will be showcased at the upcoming
LogiMAT trade show, which takes place 24-26 March in Stuttgart (Hall 10, Stand 10C31).
