Full MBO announced by MGS Technical PlasticsInjection-moulding specialist MGS Technical Plastics has entered a new chapter following the completion of a full management buyout by its three directors. Effective 22nd January, long‑standing owner John Sturgess has sold equal shares of the Blackburn-based company to chairperson Neil Garrity, managing director Judson Smythe and commercial director Mark Preston.

Announcing the deal to staff, Mr Smythe described the transition as a major milestone in the evolution of the business, noting that the company’s operations and strategic direction will continue uninterrupted. He added that MGS’s commitment to both customers and the wider community remains central to its future. He said: “Our focus will continue to be on delivering outstanding products and services to our customers and remain a business beacon for growth that supports our strong heritage and community engagement in the North West.”

Mr Sturgess reflected on the company’s journey since he joined the business in 1983, when the workforce was just four people. Appointed managing director in 1991, he later took sole control of the firm as it continued to grow. Mr Garrity joined MGS in 2010, Mr Smythe in 2016 and Mr Preston first joined in 2006, returning to the business in 2018 after a six‑year period elsewhere.

In recent years the company has accelerated its long-term vision, achieving steady turnover growth supported by a team of more than 60 skilled employees. According to Mr Preston, this progress is the result of strategic agility, sustained investment in advanced manufacturing technology and sustainability initiatives, and the commitment of the workforce. The management team increased its shareholding in mid‑2024, culminating in full ownership with the completion of the latest buyout.

Extremely proud

Mr Sturgess said: “Our growth over recent years is in no small part due to the leadership and vision of Neil, Judson and Mark as I have gradually stepped back from a customer‑facing role.” He explained: “The time now feels right to completely hand over the business to this trio. I feel extremely proud of all that we have accomplished. But the management team now deserves the opportunity to take the business even further forward. I have every confidence that the entire team will continue to deliver the manufacturing excellence which MGS is renowned for.”

Mr Smythe echoed that sentiment, emphasising both the strength of the company and the legacy it intends to uphold. He said: “We have a strong legacy to uphold and there will inevitably be new challenges to navigate. But the business is in a strong position. Last year was a phenomenal one for MGS marked by numerous successes, including significant business wins and award recognitions. MGS remains an incredible and sustainable manufacturing business, with a strong team to lead and a rich and diverse mix of clients that we are honoured to support.”

The deal was supported by Lloyds, whose relationship director Ria Kelsall commented on the company’s progress and future prospects. She said: “Over the years MGS has grown into one of the leading manufacturers in its sector and now Judson and his team are already driving the next phase of its development. It was a pleasure to be able to help them manage this transition, and I’m excited to see how this thriving business will continue to fuel growth across the North West.”

MGS Technical Plastics will be exhibiting at Southern Manufacturing from 3rd–5th February 2026, where visitors can meet the team on stand K270.
