British Steel sees surge in apprenticeship applicationsMore than 1,000 people have applied for apprenticeships and graduate roles at British Steel. Over 600 people have applied to join British Steel as an apprentice. The applications will be reviewed before assessment centres are staged in the coming months to decide who joins the company in September. Meanwhile, assessment centres are busy selecting candidates for British Steel’s graduate roles – the company’s first for many years – after it received more than 450 applications.

Nick Ashton, British Steel HR director, said: “We are delighted by this incredible response and the high quality of applications we have received for our apprentice and graduate roles. I thank everyone who has applied and look forward to welcoming many more highly talented people into the business later this year.”

The programme provides the perfect blend of classroom learning and real-world experience. It starts with training from provider, CATCH, before moving into plant-based roles in areas such as steelmaking, ironmaking and infrastructure. The apprentices and graduates will work alongside experienced professionals, gaining the skills and knowledge needed to make a real impact on the business.

Apprentices at British Steel enjoy benefits such as 35 days’ holiday (including bank holidays), a company pension scheme, a health cash plan and an Employee Assistance Programme. Once the apprenticeship is completed, the company’s aim is to offer a permanent role within its engineering or technical teams.
