New managing director appointed at historical manufacturer

New managing director appointed at historical manufacturerOne of the UK’s longest-standing precision engineering firms has announced a significant leadership transition with Stuart Whitehouse taking over as managing director at Regent Engineering, succeeding long-serving directors and owners, Alan and John Shaw.

The appointment marks both a continuation of a proud family legacy and the beginning of a new era for the Darlaston-based manufacturer — its roots stretch back to 1941. Founded by Arthur Shaw, the business has grown from a local toolmaking operation into a respected supplier of pressings, welded assemblies and fabricated products serving UK and European markets.

Arthur’s sons Alan, John and Tony, eventually took over the business from their father and stewarded the company through decades of industrial change, maintaining its reputation for quality while investing in capabilities and people. Under their leadership, Regent Engineering has remained a trusted employer in the Black Country, supporting generations of skilled workers and adapting to evolving customer demands across sectors including defence, transportation, safety and infrastructure.

Today, the ISO 9001-accredited company employs around 30 people and offers comprehensive in-house capability spanning pressings from 50 to 750 tonnes, MIG and TIG welding in aluminium and stainless steel, laser cutting, and powder coating of fabrications up to four tonnes. Additional accreditations, including EN 1090 and TÜV, reinforce its position as a high-quality manufacturing partner.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, Stuart Whitehouse said: “Alan and his father built something truly special at Regent Engineering. For more than 80 years, they have delivered exceptional engineering and created a business that is deeply rooted in its community and trusted by its customers. It is a privilege to follow in their footsteps.”

Mr Whitehouse brings with him a wealth of leadership experience in UK manufacturing. His career includes senior roles at Joseph Ash Galvanizing, where he served as group managing director, as well as general manager at Elta. He has a strong track record in operational improvement, multi-site leadership, and strategic growth, alongside more recent experience through his own venture, SJW Business Coaching.

Speaking about his vision for the business, he said: “Regent Engineering has all the foundations needed for continued success: outstanding technical capability; a loyal and skilled workforce; and a reputation built on decades of quality. My focus is on building on that legacy, investing in the team, and ensuring we continue to evolve to meet the needs of modern manufacturing markets.”

“We will honour the company’s heritage while embracing new opportunities, whether that is in advanced manufacturing, new sectors, or product innovation. I am excited to be working with the team to take Regent Engineering forward.”
