Gazi Metal, one of Turkey’s longest‑established steel producers, has ordered a new foundation‑free work roll grinder from
Pomini Tenova as part of an expansion of roll-shop capacity at its Karasu Sakarya plant.
The contract reinforces a long‑standing relationship between the two companies and sees Pomini Tenova, an Italian Tenova brand specialising in roll-shop equipment and services, supplying an advanced grinding solution designed to support higher throughput and operational flexibility at the site.
The newly ordered work roll grinder is engineered for high‑precision applications and features a foundation‑free design, allowing it to be integrated more easily into existing facilities. By eliminating the need for extensive civil works, the machine reduces installation timelines and associated costs, while providing greater flexibility in plant layout. The configuration has been tailored specifically to increase the overall productivity of Gazi Metal’s roll shop operations. Delivery of the grinder is scheduled for early 2027, with commissioning expected to follow shortly afterwards.
Seamless data exchange
Gazi Metal CEO Mustafa Gazioğlu said: “This project further strengthens a long‑standing and successful partnership. When Gazi Metal first established its cold-rolling facilities, Pomini Tenova was selected as the roll shop partner of choice. Our consistent satisfaction over the years with the performance of the Pomini Combi grinder and the integrated Mill Communication System, ensuring seamless data exchange between the roll shop and the mill, has been a key factor behind our decision to expand our collaboration.”
Mr Gazioğlu also praised Pomini Tenova’s latest PDSA (Pomini Digital Surface Analysis) technology, which applies artificial intelligence to roll surface inspection. He added: “The introduction of PDSA is particularly impressive. This solution leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to detect surface imperfections that were previously identifiable only by the most experienced operators. We are seriously evaluating its implementation to ensure that Gazi Metal remains at the forefront of quality control.”
Petar Rokić, sales area manager at Pomini Tenova, said: “Our continued collaboration with Gazi Metal is a testament to both the reliability of our technology and the strength of our relationship with the Turkish steel industry. When a long‑standing partner chooses to further expand its capacity with us, it represents the highest form of validation for our engineering and innovation.”
The investment underscores the growing importance of modern, data‑driven roll shop solutions as steel producers seek to improve productivity, quality assurance and operational efficiency within existing footprints. As cold rolling operations face increasing demands on surface quality and throughput, foundation‑free equipment and advanced digital inspection tools are becoming key enablers of incremental capacity expansion without major structural modifications.
