Airbus has signed a partnership agreement with European artificial intelligence specialist
Mistral AI, aiming to embed advanced, ethical and trustworthy AI at the heart of its operations, from initial design through to on-board capabilities.
The collaboration is set to broaden the use of AI across Airbus’ commercial aircraft, helicopter, defence and space activities, while maintaining stringent security and sovereignty standards, particularly for critical and highly confidential military aerospace applications.
Catherine Jestin, executive vice president digital at Airbus, said: “This partnership paves the way for the deployment of high-impact, high-value use cases of trusted and responsible AI in aerospace. Thanks to the high-performance models and made-to-measure support of Mistral AI experts, we are building the foundations necessary to power our current and future products and services, enabling us to serve our customers better.”
Under the agreement, Airbus will take licences for Mistral AI’s full product suite, allowing it to deploy AI models on-premises, within trusted cloud environments or in configurations tailored to customer needs. The arrangement also gives Airbus direct access to Mistral AI’s research teams and influence over its product development roadmap, supporting the creation of bespoke solutions designed for complex aerospace challenges.
Timothée Lacroix, co-founder and CTO at Mistral AI, said: “We are proud to partner with Airbus and contribute to its critical industrial operations. Together, we will deploy Mistral’s fully integrated AI stack to accelerate innovation, contribute to improve flight safety, and deliver greater value for customers.”
Initial areas of collaboration include industrial operations, where AI is being used to streamline complex workflows, notably through the automation of technical document production for commercial aircraft and helicopters. In engineering and design, the partnership will focus on accelerating innovation cycles with AI-driven simulations, including aircraft component optimisation and on-demand support for engineers throughout development, testing and certification phases.
Airbus and Mistral AI are also exploring the use of “edge AI” in next-generation products, enabling the deployment of AI models on board aircraft and spacecraft. Applications under consideration include automatic object recognition to enhance situational awareness and improve flight safety.
In defence, the collaboration will address sovereign requirements through highly secure, on-premises deployments supporting military-specific use cases such as cyber investigation and coding assistance.
The agreement marks a further step in Airbus’ digital transformation strategy, positioning artificial intelligence as a core enabler across its industrial and product landscape while maintaining a focus on security, reliability and regulatory compliance.
