The
Borders Technical Training Association (BTTA) has welcomed the new Labour training strategy with its focus on apprenticeships and technical training.
Based in Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders, the organisation offers Modern Apprentice and engineering training in its purpose-built training centre which opened in April this year.
BTTA Group training director, Russell Coleman said: “The shift in emphasis towards apprenticeships and technical training by the Government is to be welcomed. University is not for everyone and many young people can begin a very successful career by following the apprenticeship route. Not only do they gain valuable skills with on the job training but they obtain a nationally recognised qualification as well being paid.
“With the growth of AI many traditional white collar jobs are under threat. However, jobs with hands on skills are predicted to thrive in future. Contrast this with the many students who leave university and struggle to find fulfilling employment whilst being saddled with huge debts.”
IMechE The
Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has also commented on the latest Government initiative.
James Partington, director of engineering policy and impact at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “The Prime Minister's commitment to embed technical learning into education from age 14 is a significant step towards building the engineering workforce the UK needs. As demand for engineers grows to deliver the Industrial Strategy, young people must have clear, high-quality technical pathways alongside academic routes.
“Success will depend on getting the whole system right. That means recognising apprenticeships alongside higher education in destination measures, improving teachers' understanding of technical careers and routes, simplifying the technical education landscape, and ensuring greater consistency across the devolved administrations.
“As the professional home of mechanical engineering, the Institution stands ready to provide independent engineering expertise to help shape and deliver these reforms.”
