EMCO has introduced the Universalturn 50, a new turning centre designed to provide manufacturers with greater flexibility and productivity when machining complex turned and milled components.
The machine is the first model in a new Universalturn range and is aimed at subcontractors and OEMs producing parts for sectors including mechanical engineering, hydraulics and pneumatics, automotive, medical technology, transport and defence.
With a bar capacity of 50mm and a compact footprint, the new machine is available in three variants, ranging from a basic driven-tool configuration to a fully equipped model featuring a counter spindle and Y-axis for complete machining operations.
The machine incorporates a rigid cast iron bed designed to minimise vibration and improve thermal stability, helping to maintain accuracy over extended production runs. A fully integrated Y-axis, available on selected models, provides ±40mm travel and supports more complex milling, drilling and off-centre machining operations.
Main spindle speeds reach 6,200rev/min, while driven tools are available with speeds of either 5,000rev/min or 12,000rev/min depending on configuration. Main spindle power is rated at up to 30kW on belt-driven models, while the direct-drive spindle version delivers 21kW. The direct-drive UT50 SMY model also features a 21kW counter spindle to enable complete machining in a single setup.
A 12-station turret is fitted as standard, with either VDI30 or BMT45 tooling interfaces. Depending on configuration, the machine can accommodate six or 12 driven tool positions, supporting a wide range of turning, drilling and milling operations.
For precision work, the Universalturn 50 includes a standard C-axis with an angular resolution of 0.0001°. Absolute measuring systems are fitted to the linear axes, with positioning accuracy quoted at 0.003mm in the X, Y and Z axes.
EMCO says the machine has been designed with automation in mind. Manufacturers can choose from a range of short and long bar feeders, while optional automated loading and unloading systems include a CNC-controlled mini gantry with double gripper for handling preformed components. Finished parts can be transferred automatically to a collection box or conveyor.
The company is initially offering the machine with Siemens Sinumerik One control. The flagship UT50 SMY version also incorporates EMCONNECT, EMCO's digital connectivity platform, which provides access to machine and production data through an integrated operator interface. A Fanuc-controlled version is also due to be introduced.
Cooling is provided via a standard 15-bar coolant system delivered through the turret interface, while an automatic central lubrication system and compact hydraulic unit are designed to support reliable unattended operation.
Key specifications include X, Y and Z travels of 175mm, ±40mm and 510mm respectively, rapid traverse rates of up to 30m/min in the Z axis, and a maximum bar capacity of 50mm.
According to EMCO, the Universalturn 50 combines the proven design principles of its MAXXTURN series with new developments in automation, connectivity and machining performance, providing manufacturers with a scalable platform for the efficient production of increasingly complex components.
