Accumold breaks ground on $33.25million expansion

Accumold breaks ground on $33.25million expansion Accumold has broken ground on a major $33.25 million expansion of its Ankeny, Iowa, campus, making a significant long-term investment in additional production capacity, manufacturing capability, and supply security for customers requiring precision micro manufacturing at scale.

The approximately 53,000-square-foot fourth building is expected to nearly double production capacity and support the creation of around 150 new jobs. Completion is scheduled for February 2028.

For customers, however, the significance extends well beyond additional floor space. The new facility will be used primarily for production and will provide capacity for new equipment and technology, expanded quality and tooling capabilities, and additional technical and administrative resources. It gives Accumold greater headroom to grow alongside existing customers while accommodating new programs as demand develops across advanced, high-value applications.

Roger Hargens, president and CEO of Accumold, said: “This expansion gives us the space, technology and capabilities to keep growing alongside our customers. It is also an investment in Ankeny and in the people whose skill and commitment make our work possible.” That combination of capacity, capability, and people is central to the investment.

For products that progress from initial design and validation into sustained high-volume manufacturing, continuity of manufacturing expertise can be just as important as technical capability. Accumold’s rolling 13-month workforce retention averages 98.67%, with turnover averaging just 1.1% and employee tenure approximately 7.25 years. That workforce stability helps retain the manufacturing knowledge and process expertise on which demanding programs depend.

The expansion also reinforces Accumold’s commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing and increasingly resilient domestic supply chains. The Weitz Company of Des Moines is general contractor, with SVPA Architects of West Des Moines providing architectural services, while the 150 anticipated new positions will span production, quality, tooling, administration, and other areas. Like Accumold’s 2016 expansion, the new building will be engineered to resist an EF-5 tornado, strengthening both employee protection and business continuity.

Mr Hargens added: “Our customers depend on precision, quality, and a reliable supply of components. As we expand our production capabilities, we are also strengthening our ability to protect our team and support our customers through disruptions.” Accumold currently employs approximately 425 people and ships precision micro-molded components from Ankeny to customers in more than 30 countries.

The latest investment is therefore not expansion for expansion’s sake. It is about building capacity ahead of demand, allowing Accumold to support customers from design and precision tooling through automation, validation, and high-volume production without capacity becoming the constraint on their growth.
