Sandvik Machining Solutions is to shut a tooling factory in Featherstone, near Wolverhampton, by the end of the year — with the loss of more than 140 jobs — and move production abroad. The workers were told of the decision at the end of last month, although Sandvik said the decision was part of a programme agreed in December.
The factory makes metal-cutting tools for the engineering, aerospace and automotive sectors. Sandvik said the closure was necessary to ensure that the business remained competitive. It is now working with the Unite union to try and minimise the impact of the redundancies. Sandvik also has production operations in Coventry, Halesowen and Stoke-on-Trent.
