Motad focuses on growthMotad, which moved to Walsall from London in 1980 to be closer to its suppliers, is targeting growth after receiving investment from the Black Country Gold scheme (led by Wolverhampton City Council).

The company, which has designed and manufactured motorcycle exhausts in the UK for nearly 40 years, required funding to invest in the latest automatic wire-fed MIG welders.

It also wanted to put systems and processes in place to boost productivity, enhance product quality and maintain a ‘healthy’ pricing structure. It currently sources most of its components from within a 10-mile radius of the Black Country.

The Black Country Gold scheme was set up to support SMEs looking to grow their business by 20%.

Motad owner and founder Alan Baker said: “The funding process was easy to follow, and the time-scale was short; it only took eight weeks from our expression of interest until the final authorisation. The funding will help us to underpin our growth strategy of attracting further OEM customers.

“We will also be able to demonstrate our commitment to the latest technologies to ensure competitive pricing and exceptional quality.”

Mohammad Nazir, Walsall Council’s head of regeneration, said: “It’s great that a local company such as Motad has benefitted from the Black Country Gold initiative and is using it to enhance its reputation as a key supplier within the motor trade.

“This is further evidence of how ambitious and innovative SMEs in Walsall are investing in growth and planning for the future.”
