High-efficiency drive system at Bedford SteelsSheffield-based Bedford Steels — a leading supplier of hollow bar to the mining and construction industry — has invested in a new drive package for a set of four rolling stands, each of which contains four rolls.

Designed and commissioned by SEW Eurodrive (www.sew-eurodrive.co.uk), the package consists of a high-efficiency X-series shaft-mounted bevel-helical gearbox driven by a 450kW ABB energy-efficient motor and an ABB panel-mounted low-harmonic regenerative inverter drive.

The heavy-duty X-series range of helical and bevel-helical industrial gearboxes offers a choice of 23 sizes, with torques ranging from 6.8 to 475kNm.

The finely graduated size options avoid the need to specify an oversized gearbox; with the availability of pre-defined accessories, these units can be adapted to suit a wide range of applications.

An off-line oil filtration system fitted on the new gearbox will remove water plus solid particulates down to 0.5µm and keep it in perfect condition. Full condition monitoring is provided by four vibration monitors and one oil motor.

SEW Eurodrive carried out the mechanical installation and commissioning, while Halcyon Drives supplied and installed the electrical side of the system.

Bedford Steels now has a ‘state of the art’ electromechanical drive system with excellent speed control that will deliver significant energy savings compared to the old system.
