Sheffield-based JRI Orthopaedics (
jri-ltd.com) has bought a venture launched by four surgeons — Andrew Hamer, Ian Stockley, Robert Kerry and Simon Buckley.
Sheffield Medical Products Ltd (
www.sheffieldmedical.co.uk) was founded eight years ago to introduce a specialised hip-replacement system, and its first patients received their new hips in September 2011.
Since then, it has helped around 700 patients, and it has worked with JRI on a number of projects.
JRI chief executive Keith Jackson said: “The Avanteon hip system will be fully integrated with our own products to provide a comprehensive total hip and hemi-arthroplasty offering to the market.
“This is a hugely important step in our business growth strategy; we expect Avanteon to be an increasingly important part of our portfolio over the coming years.
“We are delighted that the surgeons who developed it will continue to be involved, providing training and expert input on further enhancements.”
Mr Hamer said: “We are delighted that SMPL has been acquired by JRI, as it will allow for further development of the hip system. We are particularly pleased that it will be manufactured in Sheffield, which is world-renowned for the manufacture of high-quality orthopaedic devices.
“We will continue to play an active role in the development of the system, with particular focus on surgeon training and education.”
