Making light of heavy engineering

Making light of heavy engineeringA particular focus on the stand of Chesterfield-based Dormer Pramet (www.dormerpramet.com) (Hall 3, Stand A64) will be the company’s offer for the heavy-engineering industry. An example of Dormer Pramet’s growing reputation in this sector was the support provided to Robert Nyblad GmbH, a manufacturer of components for the wind-power industry. Based in Papenburg, Germany, Nyblad was challenged with machining a 20-tonne cast-iron rotor shaft that forms part of the drivetrain.

In tests for this operation, the noise level in the production hall increased significantly, while inserts achieved only a short life span. In fact, the company had to regularly interrupt tests as it was not possible to carry out a complete pass without an insert change. Moreover, the high set-up times were increasing the overall processing time.
Nyblad’s long-standing supplier — Wocken — recommended using Pramet’s CNMM insert with OR chip breaker and T9315 grade, which the company says offers high levels of performance and heat resistance. It has a layered construction that makes the cutting material more stable, harder and more resistant to both plastic deformation and built-up edge.

Nyblad says the insert’s resistance to cracking and fatigue was instantly noticeable when machining the rotor shaft, while additional benefits included higher chip volume and decreased noise levels. Dormer Pramet is now Nyblad’s preferred cutting-tool provider for its heavy-duty applications. The company’s expertise in heavy engineering is highlighted in a new brochure, copies of which will be available on the company’s stand.
