Cutting-tool innovations from Mapal

Cutting-tool innovations from Mapal Mapal (www.mapal.com) (Hall 4, Stand A18), which has a UK subsidiary in Rugby, will use EMO 2017 as the launch pad for its new c-COM cloud-based data platform, as well as a host of new cutting-tool lines.

Tooling launches will include the CPR500/510 replaceable-head reamer; available in diameters from 8 to 40mm, this incorporates optimised cooling and offers an economic advantage when machining castings (the issue of cooling is important for this application, due to the abrasiveness of the cast material, but Mapal says this has been addressed by the internal coolant supply and outlets that direct fluid at the cutting edges).

Furthermore, the solid-carbide replaceable head on these tools features a purpose-designed CVD coating that is designed to extend tool life.

Complementing the latest reaming line will be a completely new programme of ISO indexable inserts for boring steel, stainless steel and heat-resistant cast steel.

Depending on prevailing conditions, such as material, machine stability, coolant and clamping, customers can choose between PVD- and CVD-coated cutting materials.

Mapal will also be showing an extension to its three-edge Tritan-Drill range, which was launched last year. At EMO, the introduction of a specially adapted version means that steel can now be machined more cost-effectively compared with drills featuring two cutting edges.

For manufacturers seeking milling solutions, Mapal has extended its programme of solid-carbide milling cutters for roughing applications.

The new five-edge OptiMill-Uni-Wave is a ‘full-slot’ mill for producing groove depths up to 2xD, thanks largely to a highly ductile carbide substrate, a wear-resistant coating and special edge preparation.

According to Mapal, these developments result in a tool-life increase of up to 50%. (a ‘diamond knurl’ geometry provides optimised distribution of the cutting forces and ensures good chip formation).

The range will be available in short, long, over-long and extra-long sizes in the HB shank form. Diameters range from 4 to 25mm.

For face-milling operations, EMO will see the introduction of a new generation of milling tools for cutting depths up to 4mm. With replaceable PCD milling cartridges, PowerMill-Blue is designed for machining aluminium in the automotive industry.

Chip-guiding geo-metry has been optimised, while the chip former is no longer integrated in the tool body but directly in the milling cassettes, resulting in better surface finishes.
