AI technology powers new ultrasound system

AI technology powers new ultrasound systemBefore the recent European Congress of Radiology, GE Healthcare announced the commercial launch of its new high-end radiology ultrasound system, the Logiq E10 (www.gehealthcare.com).

This fully digital system integrates artificial-intelligence technology, cloud connectivity and advanced algorithms to acquire and reconstruct data faster than previously possible.

Knut Brabrand, head of ultrasound at the department of radiology at Oslo University Hospital, said: “We perform an average of 30 ultrasound exams every day and more than 1,000 ultrasound-guided interventional procedures a year, for which we need advanced tools to guide us.

“I’ve noticed a significant improvement in image quality with the Logiq E10. As a result, I have been able to spot tiny lesions in the liver that I would not have seen with our previous technology.”

The same technology that is powering driverless cars and the next generation of 3-D video games is also behind this ultrasound system’s platform — namely, cSound Architecture.

This advanced GPU (graphics processing unit) technology acquires and reconstructs data in a similar way to an MRI or CT system, allowing 48-times the data throughput and 10-times the processing power of previous systems.

The power of the cSound Architecture is such that it can process an amount of data equivalent to playing two entire DVDs in just one second — in real time.

Moreover, the system eliminates the need for ‘focal zones’, as the entire image is always in focus throughout an examination.
