MMC Thai facility makes five-millionth carEarlier this month, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) (www.mitsubishicars.com) announced that Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co Ltd (MMTh) — its exclusive producer and distributor in Thailand — had produced the five-millionth vehicle (a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport) at its facility in Laem Chabang.

This is MMC’s biggest facility outside Japan, capable of producing up to 424,000 vehicles a year.

MMC started its operations in Thailand in 1961, passing the first million-unit production mark in 2003. The second million followed in 2010, and the third million in 2013.

As demand increased, the four-million mark was reached in 2015.

Out of the five million vehicles, 3.7 million were for export — to more than 120 countries world-wide. In 2016, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand celebrated its three millionth export vehicle.

MMTh currently operates three automobile plants in Laem Chabang. The first plant was opened in 1992, and the second in 1996, focusing on the production of L200 pick-up trucks.

In 2007, MMTh joined the Eco Car project and invested in the third automobile plant, which started producing ‘eco cars’ in 2012.

MMTh also has a powertrain plant that produces engines for both domestic and export markets. MMTh currently has over 6,600 employees.
