Newcastle-based EDM Zone (
www.edmzone.co.uk), a precision engineering specialist, has responded to the Covid-19 pandemic by focusing on the production of medical components.
Established in 2007, the company usually produces parts for a variety of clients involved in the automotive, aerospace and electrical industry. However, after being deemed an essential business, due to its capability to produce components for the medical industry, EDM Zone has temporarily switched its focus.
Roger Wilson, EDM Zone technical engineering manager, said: “Our manufacturing and management processes lend themselves perfectly to medical parts, therefore the transition was easy for us. We are well versed at producing technically challenging components in both low- and high-volume, so we were able to adapt quickly.”
While Mr Wilson could not give specific details about the products due to confidentiality agreements, he was able to say the products EDM Zone have been producing are being used in the UK and China.
He added: “We are fortunate in that we have a well-trained, flexible, committed team and therefore we do whatever it takes. We have followed the Government guidelines all the way to protect our staff which includes social distancing measures and the provision of PPE equipment.”
When asked if he expected to see the demand for medical components increase over the coming weeks, Mr Wilson said: “Yes, we have been contacted by Government sources and medical companies regarding our services, therefore the medical markets are certainly a growth area for our business.”
However, Mr Wilson was confident that any increase in demand would not be an issue for EDM Zone. He concluded: “We have the largest capacity for wire EDM/wire erosion manufacturing in the UK, therefore capacity is never an issue for us. We can produce a one-off up to 10,000 parts each day.”
