UK Steel welcomes recognition of steel as a national asset

UK Steel welcomes recognition of steel as a national assetUK Steel has welcomed forthcoming Government guidance that will, for the first time, explicitly recognise steel as a critical sector for national security and prioritise the use of British steel in public contracts.

Under the new measures, Government departments will be expected to use UK-produced steel or provide a clear justification where overseas sourcing is chosen, marking a significant strengthening of procurement policy following last month’s Steel Strategy. The forthcoming guidance forms part of a wider package to boost domestic capacity in key sectors including steel, shipbuilding, AI and energy infrastructure, reflecting growing recognition of the importance of resilient supply chains and economic security.

Gareth Stace, director-general of UK Steel, said: “This is a major step forward and a clear signal that the Government recognises steel as a strategic national asset. Prioritising British-produced steel in public procurement is one of the most effective ways to support domestic industry, strengthen supply chains and protect our national security.

“For far too long, there has been no accountability for sending taxpayer’s money abroad. Requiring departments to justify public spending on imported steel is a practical and proportionate approach that will help ensure public investment delivers maximum value for UK jobs, skills and economic resilience.

“We look forward to the forthcoming publication of this guidance and will work with the Government to ensure it is implemented consistently and effectively across major infrastructure and public projects.”
