Origame-inspired manufacturing method granted US patentStilfold, a developer of ‘sustainable design and manufacturing technology’, has announced that its ‘foundational patent family’ has been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), saying this ‘milestone’ represents a significant advancement for the company’s ‘origami-inspired’ manufacturing method, which ‘radically improves material efficiency and reduces the environmental impact of industrial production’.

Stilfold’s proprietary curve folding technology enables the manufacture — from flat sheet metal — of complex geometrical structures with ‘unprecedented precision and strength’. The company says this method minimises material usage by parts integration and, as a result, decreases production costs while significantly lowering the carbon footprint of manufacturing processes in industries ranging from automotive and aerospace to renewable energy, construction, and consumer products.

Jonas Nyvang, Stilfold’s CEO and co-founder, said: “We are thrilled to receive this patent recognition in the US. Our technology is not just about creating stronger and lighter products; it’s about redefining how we approach manufacturing in a way that benefits both businesses and the planet.

“This patent will protect our innovative process as we continue to expand our presence in the US market and collaborate with industry leaders to create more sustainable solutions and accelerate initiatives that include partnerships with key players in the automotive, manufacturing, and aerospace sectors. Our unique approach offers a compelling alternative to traditional manufacturing methods, reducing the need for expensive tooling and enabling more flexible, efficient production systems.”

Stilfold holds a Swedish patent and three EU patents covering 20 countries for its method, software, and machinery. Stilfold says that with its core technology now protected, the company is well-positioned to lead the transformation of design and manufacturing processes worldwide.
