Aldridge firm gets Europe’s first Viper Twin Head XPR460Aldridge-based RMP Products Ltd has always invested in innovation to keep its competitive edge in the steel profiling industry. That commitment has now reached an exciting milestone with the arrival of a brand new Viper Twin Head XPR460 CorePlus plasma cutting machine — the first of its kind in Europe. This advancement marks a step change not only in how it cuts and machines steel but also in how it supports local industry and employment.

The XPR460 supplied by Hypertherm represents a new generation of plasma cutting services. It offers unmatched accuracy, faster cutting speeds and significantly reduced dross levels. For customers, that means cleaner edges, tighter tolerances and a quicker turnround on every job. The system operates with advanced arc control and delivers precise cuts even on thick materials. Its ability to handle both mild and high-strength steels makes it a perfect fit for the kind of heavy-duty projects RMP is known for.

Mark Edwards, RMP’s production director, said: “We chose the XPR460 because it allows us to cut thicker material with greater accuracy. It gives us better bolt hole quality, a cleaner finish and reduces our consumable use — saving both time and cost. The machine is also far more energy efficient, so we are improving our environmental footprint while boosting our output.”

Exceptional finish quality

With the XPR460 now operational, RMP can increase capacity while improving efficiency. The machine’s intelligent features, such as automatic torch height control and advanced diagnostics, reduce set-up time and waste. This translates into faster lead times and better value for customers, particularly those working to tight project deadlines. It also allows RMP to process a wider range of materials and plate thicknesses with exceptional finish quality, all while maintaining its ISO 9001 standard.

He continued: “We have already cut several jobs from 60mm plate on our 15m bed, projects we could not have quoted for previously. In fact, we recently cut 9m-long parts out of 60mm steel. On average, we are now cutting parts up to 40% faster, which is a real game-changer for our throughput.”

Moreover, the arrival of the XPR460 has created more than just technical gains. With increased workload capacity comes the opportunity to grow the team. The company is actively recruiting to support operations across shifts and welcome applications from experienced engineers, machine setters and young apprentices alike. By expanding the team, it aims to strengthen the local economy and contribute to skills development in the West Midlands. Supporting high-quality manufacturing jobs has always been a core part of the company’s DNA.

Mr Edwards concluded: “One of the best things for me as a director is being on the shopfloor and teaching someone how to operate a machine like this. We are always looking for young, hungry individuals who want to grow with us. Seeing someone develop into a great operator is incredibly rewarding and it is a big part of how we support the manufacturing community here in the West Midlands.”
