Photo courtesy of ABBABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation has brought robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) into the public eye with a unique mural painted by its IRB 5500 robot at the
City=Gallery Street Art Festival in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. Created in collaboration with
Škoda Auto, its Endowment Fund,
PPG and festival organisers, the artwork was entirely AI-generated from public input and executed using ABB’s PixelPaint technology.
The robot, typically used in automotive paint shops, applied the design with precision using 1,000 individually controlled nozzles, eliminating the need for masking. PPG supplied a custom waterborne basecoat and weather-resistant topcoat tailored for street art.
Joerg Reger, managing director of the
ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, said: “The project was about more than engineering — it was about connecting technology with community creativity. Škoda Auto Endowment Fund director Ladislav Kučera echoed the sentiment, calling the mural “a visible symbol of local engagement and innovation”.
The live painting event, held on 4–5 September, marked the first time a robot artist featured at the festival, adding a new layer to Mladá Boleslav’s tradition of transforming public spaces into open-air galleries.
