DS Smith, an international paper company and global provider of sustainable, fibre-based packaging solutions, has partnered with
Dynamic Logistic Systems (DLS) to develop innovative cardboard buffers designed to protect critical industrial machine parts during transit.
The new packaging concept features a robust side panel made from a double wall of corrugated cardboard, complemented by sturdy side caps and end-based protective buffers. This design ensures a secure barrier on all sides of the packaging structure, providing optimal protection against shocks and vibrations during transportation to both local and international customers.
The solution offers significant space-saving benefits, reducing storage and transport volume by around 60% compared to previous DLS packaging. It also enhances warehouse efficiency, allowing semi-finished machine parts and new orders to be stacked more effectively during peak periods. Made entirely from recyclable fibre-based materials, the design replaces expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) buffers, aligning with sustainability goals.
Space-saving benefitsWilliam Lieftink, managing director of DLS, said: “The space-saving benefits are extremely impressive. We now need far less storage for our packaging materials, and this reduces our need to move pallets and products around. This also lowers the risk of damage to products during the value chain, and the fibre-based materials are aligned with our sustainability objectives. We are keen to optimise our supply chain processes wherever possible and provide a best-in-class service to customers.”
Remko Berkhout, marketing and communications manager for DS Smith Benelux, added: “We used our expertise in sustainable and fibre-based packaging design to support Dynamic Logistic Systems in moving towards a more circular future. Our packaging design is helping to optimise their supply chain to benefit the company’s customers in a variety of sectors. Vital machine parts such as dispensers for conveyor systems can now be stored and transported with increased efficiency, and we are providing an alternative to previous plastic-based options. We are committed to helping our customers meet their sustainability objectives with bespoke packaging solutions.”
Dynamic Logistic Systems works with customers across multiple industries to meet evolving supply chain demands, offering intralogistics subsystems ranging from gravity rollers to fully automated order-picking solutions, smart conveyors, pallet handling, sortation, and closing systems. DS Smith continues to lead the transition to a circular economy, delivering sustainable packaging solutions across 34 countries as part of its strategy to ‘redefine packaging for a changing world’.
