3D People deploys AMIS Runtime to improve automation

3D People deploys AMIS Runtime to improve automation3D People, a leading UK provider of industrial additive manufacturing (AM) services, has deployed AMIS Runtime across its London production facility. The partnership brings together 3D People’s long established expertise in industrial powder bed fusion with AMIS’s programmable build preparation engine.

In 2025, 3D People won a grant from Made Smarter UK to focus on developing and implementing an automated process for preparing, nesting, and scheduling of 3-D print builds. The two companies have collaboratively developed and tested Runtime across the 3D People facility with real-world validation that is demonstrating how automation can transform high mix, high volume polymer production and delivering faster turnaround times, higher consistency across shifts, and increased production capacity for both SLS and MJF systems.

Sasha Bruml, a co-founder of 3D People, said: “This project marked a key step in our long-term digital manufacturing strategy. It builds upon our existing MES platform, closing the loop between digital order management and physical production. The results are exciting with a more efficient, data-driven workflow that reduces human error, increases repeatability and strengthens our position as one of the UK’s leading advanced 3D printing services. The full deployment of AMIS Runtime is now reaping rewards across the whole business.”

3D People’s production facility delivers end use PA12, TPU and engineered polymer parts for industries including film and TV, automotive, marine, robotics and electronics, to name a few. Customer demands include high quality parts, short lead times, repeatable manufacturing and the ability to scale from prototypes to thousands of parts on-demand. AMIS Runtime has been integrated directly into this environment, automating the build preparation stage from file import and metadata rules to intelligent nesting, slicing, exporting and continuous re-nesting.

3D People co-founder Felix Manley added: “AMIS Runtime is a perfect complement to how we manufacture. Our production relies on consistency and the ability to respond quickly when priorities change. Runtime lets us automate the repetitive tasks, so our team can focus on engineering, quality and customer support — the areas where we add the most value.”

Factory expansion

3D People recently expanded its factory with new SLS production capacity and additional material offerings. The introduction of Runtime has eliminated many of the bottlenecks associated with manual build preparation, specifically with end to end scripted workflows for importing, repairing, nesting, slicing and exporting every part. High density ‘Q*Nest’ builds are now generated automatically with consistent rules applied across every operator and every shift as well as continuous re-nesting that enables ‘always up-to-date’ batches.

Kris Binon, managing director at AMIS said: “3D People represents exactly the type of partner Runtime was built for. They’re fast, industrially focused and committed to quality. Their input during development helped shape Runtime into a practical tool for their real production environment — not just a lab experiment.”

Before full deployment, 3D People validated Runtime on multiple live use cases. This included daily automated nesting for MJF and SLS builds, batch regeneration when urgent customer orders arrived, density and part-aware nesting to maximise throughput, automated metadata pipelines for traceability and part numbering and clean 3MF exports + part lists for internal tracking and customer documentation. These workflows now run reliably and predictably, dramatically improving efficiencies across production by allowing the team to handle more orders with the same headcount, while improving turnaround time for customers.

Both companies agree that the success of this deployment can be attributed to their shared design and engineering led approach. While 3D People is focused on industrial capability with digital simplicity, AMIS was able to provide the tools needed to automate and standardise the most time consuming parts of the workflow. The results that are now being achieved keenly demonstrate how automation is really not just a buzzword, but delivering key metrics such as higher build value and lower cost per part, reduced machine down time, increased right-first-time build rate and reduced technician time spent on manual build creation.

AMIS Runtime is now part of 3D People’s operational backbone and demonstrably providing efficiency, quality and utilisation gains across the production facility.
