Derby is poised to reinforce its reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation following a £1.5 million investment to create the new Infinity Prototyping Centre (IPC).
The project will transform the former Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre facility into a modern, collaborative space designed to support cutting-edge research and development.
Backed by funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (
EMCCA), the scheme brings together
Derby City Council, the
University of Derby and Infinity Technology Group. The partnership aims to deliver a state-of-the-art centre offering flexible workspaces and specialist services tailored to organisations operating across the nuclear supply chain and wider advanced manufacturing sectors.
The redevelopment will introduce high-quality R&D environments intended to foster closer collaboration between local supply chain companies and research institutions. By embedding innovation at the core of the facility, the IPC is expected to draw new clients and partners to the city.
In addition to its technological focus, the project is forecast to deliver tangible economic benefits. The IPC is set to create 11 high-value roles, alongside wider employment opportunities, and is expected to play a key role in attracting further inward investment. It will also support Derby’s ambitions to remain at the forefront of the UK’s low-carbon and clean energy economy.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council, said: “This a great example of partnership working in action. It will offer a huge boost to our local economy and reaffirm Derby’s place as a national leader for innovation, manufacturing and world-class research and development.”
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward added: “This investment demonstrates my commitment to creating high-quality jobs and supporting the industries that will power our future economy. The IPC is exactly the kind of forward-thinking project we want to champion.”
Professor Gary Jones, chief executive officer for
Infinity Technology Group said: Project Infinity shall provide local growth, regional impact, national capability and international renown. The Infinity Prototype Centre (IPC) is a fundamental 'early mover' capability on Infinity Park Derby and provides a unique building to underpin the wider park development. EMCCA funding is essential to support the IPC and aligns with the Team Derby initiative for inclusive growth in the region."
Work is now underway, with completion expected in summer 2026, marking an important step in the continued development of the East Midlands Investment Zone.
