NCMT to launch Makino BX3 EDM machine at Engineered for Power event NCMT will showcase the Makino BX3 EDM machine at its Engineered for Power technical event, held at the company’s Coventry Technology Centre on 9–10 September 2026, highlighting that the technology is now available to its grinding customers across Europe.

The BX3 has been developed specifically for machining small-diameter cooling-air holes in turbine blades and vanes manufactured from heat-resistant alloys. Its first appearance at the event will give aerospace and power-generation manufacturers an opportunity to examine the technology and discuss potential applications directly with NCMT engineers.

The machine combines submerged EDM drilling, high-pressure flushing and multi-axis workpiece positioning to produce complex cooling-hole patterns in a single set-up. Submerged machining helps to maintain a stable discharge condition, including during through-hole operations, supporting consistent machining performance and reliable breakthrough detection.

Dielectric fluid is delivered through the pipe electrode at pressures of up to 10 MPa. This rapidly removes debris from the machining zone, supporting high-speed drilling while reducing the risk of unstable discharge conditions.

An integrated breakthrough detection system identifies when the electrode pierces the component wall. The machine can then prevent further electrode travel, helping to avoid back-strike damage to the opposing internal wall of thin-section turbine blades and vanes.

NCMT 1 The BX3 can also generate shaped diffuser features using standard pipe electrodes. By programming the electrode path to match the required diffuser geometry, manufacturers can produce shaped cooling-hole exits without creating a dedicated form electrode for each feature.

Electrode diameters from 0.2 to 3.0mm can be accommodated, with electrode lengths of up to 740mm including the holder. The standard automatic tool changer provides capacity for 24 pipe electrodes, reducing intervention during components containing large numbers of cooling holes.

A high-mounted electrode magazine shortens fluid filling and draining times during automatic tool changes. The machine can also accommodate up to eight guide plates within its automatic guide-changing system, allowing different taper and positioning guides to be exchanged as part of the machining cycle.

The working envelope includes X, Y and Z travels of 370mm, 270mm and 750mm respectively. An NC rotary worktable provides continuous A-axis rotation, while the B-axis offers a tilt range from -140° to +140°. A rotary C-axis head operates between 10 and 1,000 rev/min, enabling electrodes to be presented to complex blade and vane surfaces at the required angle.

Workpieces measuring up to 300mm in diameter by 300mm high, including the holder, and weighing up to 20kg can be accommodated. A vibration-control finger supports long pipe electrodes during rotation, suppressing deflection at the electrode midpoint before retracting automatically as machining progresses.

The BX3 will form part of the wider technology programme at Engineered for Power, alongside the Makino G5 grinding machine and advanced Makino and Okuma machining solutions. The event is focused on the manufacture of turbine blades, vanes and other high-value engine components where process stability, dimensional accuracy, surface integrity and repeatability are critical.

Visitors will be able to see the BX3 at close quarters and discuss cooling-hole production, process development and application requirements with NCMT’s technical specialists.
