Air Turbine Tools highlights new air motors for rubber drilling

Air Turbine Tools highlights new air motors for rubber drilling Air Turbine Technology Inc., the leading manufacturer of governed constant high-speed turbine spindles, is promoting its 202HD and 450HD governed air motors for manufacturers drilling rubber seals, bands, and gaskets for appliances, automotive applications, and industrial equipment.

Rubber drilling has traditionally been a difficult application because the material stretches, deflects, and tends to grab the tool, leading to smeared or melted edges, “fuzzy” breakout, and inconsistent diameters that compromise sealing performance. The 202HD and 450HD address these challenges by maintaining constant high RPM in the cut, shearing rubber cleanly instead of tearing it and reducing heat transfer into the material. This results in round, precise holes, smoother edges, and more consistent parts across continuous production runs.

At the heart of Air Turbine Tools’ solution is governed turbine technology designed to hold speed under load, rather than slowing as soon as the drill meets resistance. The compact, fixture-mount 202HD delivers up to 0.55 HP at governed speeds of 30,000, 40,000, 50,000, and 65,000 RPM, enabling rubber bands and seals to be drilled at extremely high rotational speed with minimal vibration. By keeping the drill at constant speed while chips clear efficiently, less heat builds in the rubber, which reduces smearing, melting, and distortion and supports cleaner breakout on the exit side of the hole. The 202HD’s stainless steel barrel allows rigid fixture mounting in demanding automation environments, giving manufacturers the mechanical stability needed for consistent hole location and diameter in continuous production of rubber bands and seals.

For larger or more demanding drilling and finishing applications, the 450HD provides a heavier-duty option that combines governed high-speed performance with a rigid steel barrel and ceramic bearing design. The 450HD delivers up to 0.88 HP at a governed 40,000 RPM with very low vibration magnitude of 1.25 m/s² r.m.s., making it well suited for robotic integrations and automated drilling cells processing thicker or harder rubber materials. Its ER11 collet and mountable barrel diameter of approximately 41mm provide flexible tool holding and straightforward integration into existing fixtures, while front sealing at the collet enables reliable operation in wet environments common to industrial rubber processing. These features allow manufacturers to drill, mill, and route rubber and composite materials at higher feed rates without sacrificing hole quality or process stability.

Across both models, the combination of constant governed speed, low vibration, and oil-free, maintenance-free operation delivers substantial productivity and quality gains for rubber drilling programs. By switching from traditional electric spindles to Air Turbine Tools motors, manufacturers typically see shorter drill cycles, reduced need for secondary operations such as trimming smeared edges, and fewer rejected parts caused by distorted or out-of-round holes. At the same time, tool life improves because constant high-speed cutting reduces rubbing and heat, while the air-driven design lowers unplanned downtime associated with overloaded or overheating spindles.
