XYZ to showcase range of machine tool technology

XYZ to showcase range of machine tool technologyBurlescombe-based XYZ Machine Tools Ltd will highlight its wide range of machine tool technology at Advanced Engineering 2018 (Stand CM40) taking place 31 October and 1 November at the NEC in Birmgham (www.xyzmachinetools.com).

Taking centre stage will be a UMC-5X, a simultaneous five-axis gantry-style machining centre priced to introduce a whole new group of potential customers to the benefits of simultaneous five-axis machining, while also featuring leading-edge technology such as Traori (transformation orientation)/kinematic functions to ensure optimised accuracy during five-axis simultaneous machining, integrated Smart Machining Technology (SMT) and thermal-growth compensation.

It also comes with a choice of control system, either the Siemens 840DSL ShopMill or the Heidenhain iTNC 640 HSCI.

Key features are the front-loading 600mm-diameter trunnion rotary table, with a high-accuracy direct-drive high-torque motor providing 90rev/min rotation of the table.

The tilting axes are servo worm-driven (there is a torque motor option that provides ±120deg of movement and takes just 2.5sec to complete this full movement with a maximum table load of 600kg).

Furthermore, the design of the machine is such that when the table is tilted 90deg towards the rear (component facing forward), there remains 500mm of Y-axis travel forward of the table surface.

This is much greater than many competitor machines (including those that quote the same axis travels as the UMC-5X), allowing larger workpieces to be machined.

Alongside the UMC-5X will be an XYZ 2-OP, a ‘portable’ vertical machining centre that can free up valuable time on more-costly machine tools. It comes with an easy-to-use ProtoTrak control system.

Other machines on show that also feature the ProtoTrak control are the SLX355 ProTurn lathe, which with its 360mm swing over the bed and 1,000mm between centres, offers an introduction to CNC turning.

Similarly, the SMX 3500 ProtoTrak-controlled bed mill is representative of the XYZ bed mill range, with three CNC axes (530mm of Z-axis travel) and the versatility provided by a swivel head and manual quill.

Completing the machine line-up at Advanced Engineering 2018 is the XYZ 500 LR vertical machining centre.

It is part of the recently introduced series of linear-rail-technology machines that sit alongside XYZ’s familiar box slideway to offer a lower-cost route into vertical machining centre ownership, while still providing customers with high levels of performance and productivity.

The three-machine LR range comprises the 500 LR, 750 LR, and 1000 LR — each equipped with a Siemens 828D control and a carousel-type tool changer (an arm-type changer is an option for the 750 and 1000 LR).
