Government Minister visits the E&D Zone at MACH 2024Halesowen-based Sandvik Coromant UK, a leading supplier of tools, tooling solutions and know-how to the metalworking industry, sponsored the Education and Development (E&D) Zone at last month’s MACH 2024 held at the NEC, Birmingham. During the week-long show, Steve Geddes, Sandvik Coromant’s regional sales manager met with Michelle Donelan MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Prior to the meeting, The Secretary of State delivered a keynote speech in the exhibition’s Seminar Theatre on how recent Government investments have driven the manufacturing sector forward. These investments include a £4.5 billion boost into advanced manufacturing. Following this, Michelle Donelan toured the show, exploring various stands, before dropping by the Education & Development (E&D) Zone.

During her visit to the E&D Zone, which served as a check-in area for students attending the show, the Secretary of State and Mr Geddes discussed the crucial development of apprentices and young people within the manufacturing sector, highlighting Sandvik Cormorant’s commitment to fostering the next generation of engineering talent.

Sandvik Coromant’s commitment to tackling the skills gap is highlighted in its brand mission of ‘Manufacturing Wellness’ which focuses on nurturing eight manufacturing habits, which are essential for successful and resilient manufacturing companies, one of which is being able attract, develop and retain talented people who are eager to make a difference and nurture their drive to learn.

To support manufacturers in developing talent, Sandvik Coromant hosts regular training events and webinars from its 14 global Sandvik Coromant Centers, including its UK Center in Halesowen, West Midlands. The ‘state of the art’ facility was inaugurated last year and serves as a national hub for metal cutting expertise. It includes two education stations with two machines equipped for tooling demonstrations, application training and engineering projects, and ultimately, helping manufacturers to develop young talent.

Mr Geddes concluded: "The success of the E&D Zone at MACH 2024 and the opportunity to engage with The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology made for a truly productive and rewarding week. The discussions held by our team with exhibitors, visitors and students alike at MACH 2024, highlights our commitment to fostering talent and innovation, supporting the next generation of manufacturing experts."
