Steering specialist invests in a five-axis Matsuura MX-520 Matsuura MX-520 CNC machining centre

Coventry-based Pailton Engineering Ltd, a steering systems specialist, has installed a new Matsuura MX-520 CNC five-axis machining centre at its headquarters in Coventry. The ‘state of the art’ machine is the latest investment into the company’s advanced manufacturing future, led by new managing director David Pound.

With a machining envelope of 520 x 350mm and a loading capacity of 150kg, the MX-520 allows the company to automate production of its yoke range. The machine requires minimal human input even when producing intricate steering system components, such as steering columns, intermediate shafts and steering universal joints.

Operations manager Steve Nollett said: “The Matsuura MX-520 is renowned for its precision, speed, flexibility and reliability, making it ideal for complex machining tasks critical to Pailton Engineering’s range of steering systems. By continuing to install advanced technology like this in our manufacturing facility, we will further improve the quality, consistency and availability of top quality steering components.”

In addition, the system has space for 60 tools to allow for sister tooling. Combined with four pallets, this enables a continuous production flow minimising downtime and allowing parts to run simultaneously.

Mr Nollett continued: “The new machine will make our time on the shopfloor much easier. The five-axes and multi-pallet system of the MX-520 enables machining of complex geometries previously impossible without manual manipulation of the part. Now, instead of needing a person present every 45min to manipulate or remove parts, we now have prolonged unmanned operation.”

This investment will help the company meet increased customer demand while continuing to deliver higher quality steering components. The decision to invest in the Matsuura MX-520 is part of Pailton Engineering’s ongoing commitment to innovation without compromising on quality.

Pailton Engineering has recently invested heavily in automating manufacturing, also installing three Haas machines and a welding robot. The company specialises in the design and manufacture of precision steering systems serving the bus and coach, commercial and military vehicle sectors.
