Moyola Precision Engineering has made a decisive move to elevate its production capabilities by investing in the UK’s first HBZ AeroCell 160|400 five-axis horizontal machining centres from German manufacturer
Bavius Technologie GmbH.. This landmark investment signals a new chapter in Moyola’s pursuit of performance, innovation, and global competitiveness.
In response to sustained growth across the aerospace sector, Moyola initiated a strategic R&D programme aimed at expanding capacity and transforming its manufacturing approach for a major international aerospace contract. The initiative focused on developing a new production methodology, integrating advanced tooling strategies and a reengineered, highly efficient workflow.
At the heart of this transformation are two HBZ AeroCell 160|400 machines — one installed in December 2023 and the second in February 2025. Configured as a fully integrated twin-pallet manufacturing cell, the machines are purpose-built for high-speed machining of large aluminium aerospace components.
Lee Averill, CAD/CAM engineering manager at Moyola, said, “The HBZ AeroCell setup has played a pivotal role in redefining our approach to large workpiece machining, consistently exceeding expectations in both speed and precision.”
Manufactured by Bavius, a company with over 40 years of expertise in five-axis machining, the HBZ AeroCell 160 is engineered for speed, precision, and reliability. Based in Baienfurt, southern Germany, Bavius has earned its reputation as a global technology partner in high-performance aluminium machining, particularly for aerospace applications.
Complex geometriesThe AeroCell’s horizontal machining configuration, dual pallet changer, and high-performance spindle enable material removal rates exceeding 12 litres per min, all while maintaining process reliability on large-volume parts. It delivers precision across complex geometries, tight tolerances at high speeds, and seamless transitions between roughing and finishing operations.
Cycle times are significantly reduced thanks to rapid tool changes, synchronised twin-pallet operation, and intelligent process control. Mr Averill added: “The installation of the HBZ AeroCell was smooth and efficient, with minimal disruption. Since commissioning, machine uptime has been good, and operational performance has exceeded expectations.”
Now operating at full production capacity, the AeroCell machines are delivering consistent results. With optimised engineering, intelligent pallet handling, and a balanced takt time, Moyola has achieved a stable, continuous machining process with minimal downtime—an ideal setup for scaling production while maintaining precision. This capability has enabled Moyola to meet critical aerospace production commitments with greater flexibility and efficiency.
The deployment of these machines also marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Moyola and bavius. Both companies share a commitment to technical excellence and innovation in aerospace manufacturing. Lee said, “Deploying the UK’s first HBZ AeroCell machines marks a major step forward in our partnership with bavius. Embracing this cutting-edge technology has been both exciting and challenging—driving innovation while reinforcing our shared commitment to excellence.”
