Latest ModuleWorks 2026.08 delivers smarter toolpaths, and simulation ModuleWorks has released version 2026.08 of its software components for CAD/CAM vendors, CNC control makers, machine tool builders and cutting tool manufacturers, introducing a range of new capabilities aimed at improving machining efficiency, process optimisation and digital manufacturing connectivity.

The latest release delivers enhancements across toolpath generation, cutting-physics-based automation, GPU-accelerated simulation, shopfloor programming and support for the Manufacturing Data Exchange Specification (MDES), helping manufacturers tackle increasingly complex machining requirements while improving productivity and quality.

Toolpath Enhancements

Toolpaths remain a major focus of the new release, with several additions designed to improve efficiency and surface finish quality in turning, 3-axis and multi-axis machining applications.
A key development is Feature-Based Machining Direction Optimization in Auto 3+2 Roughing, which automatically analyses part geometry and selects effective tool orientations for machining. By reducing the need for manual intervention, the capability can help minimise set-ups, improve cycle efficiency and lower production costs.

ModuleWorks has also integrated the VoluMill pattern into SmartRoughing. The new SmartRoughing with VoluMill functionality automatically optimises cutting depth, width of cut, spindle speed and feed rates, while retaining VoluMill’s dynamic feed reductions in corners and other high-engagement areas. The result is a roughing strategy that maximises material removal rates while maintaining process stability.

For mould and die applications, SuperFinish on NURBS Surfaces combines the reliability of mesh-based calculations with the precision of NURBS-based toolpath generation in a single cycle. The approach is intended to help users achieve high-quality finishes on complex freeform surfaces.

Cutting-Physics-Based Automation

The latest release also expands ModuleWorks’ cutting-physics-based automation technology, with a focus on improving transparency and giving users greater insight into the optimisation process.
A new SmartRoughing Physics Report provides a structured overview of generated slices and selected machining parameters following each optimisation cycle. The feature is designed to remove much of the ‘black box’ perception often associated with automated roughing decisions by showing how key machining parameters have been determined.

FeedControl has been expanded to support tapered end mills and convex tip end mills, extending optimisation capabilities to a broader range of tool geometries commonly used in mould and die manufacturing.

In addition, Review and Optimize Process Constraints allows users to inspect and adjust calculated limits such as chip load, cutting forces and machine power before final feed optimisation takes place, providing greater control over the machining process.

GPU-Accelerated Simulation

ModuleWorks continues to strengthen its GPU-based simulation technologies, reflecting the growing role of simulation as an active part of CAM workflows rather than simply a verification step.
GPU-Accelerated Engagement Tracking for Milling Operations speeds up engagement analysis for complex milling toolpaths through multi-core processing and optional GPU acceleration, enabling faster optimisation and process evaluation.

The company has also extended GPU-powered stock calculation to grinding applications with GPU-Accelerated Material Removal for Grinding. Meanwhile, Thread Cutting and Grinding with Pixel-Perfect GPU Renderer provides highly detailed visualisation for thread cutting and grinding operations, supporting more accurate inspection and analysis.

Next Generation Shopfloor Programming

For users programming directly at the machine, ModuleWorks has introduced features designed to simplify setup and improve productivity.

Automatic Machining Direction and Feature Type Suggestion helps programmers establish valid machining setups more quickly by recommending both machining directions and feature types during the feature-selection process.

Section-Based Hole Machining automatically identifies individual sections within a hole geometry, enabling each section to be machined separately. This gives programmers greater flexibility and control when creating machining strategies for complex hole features.

Expanded MDES Support

The 2026.08 release also broadens support for the Manufacturing Data Exchange Specification, helping improve interoperability across digital manufacturing environments.

MDES Equipment Starter Export adds MDES-compliant equipment data export to MachSim. CAM vendors integrating the technology can now provide direct export of standardised machine setup information, simplifying integration with compatible downstream systems such as collision-avoidance applications.

In addition, MDES Tool Assembly Integration for Toolpath enables tool assembly data in MDES format to be used directly in toolpath calculations without conversion. Together, the new capabilities streamline the exchange of machine and tooling data, helping improve connectivity across manufacturing workflows.
