Manufacturers producing high-value components often face significant challenges when creating internal threads in difficult materials. In industries such as aerospace where components often carry significant value by the time threading begins, a tool failure can result in costly scrap and production delays. To help manufacturers improve reliability in these demanding operations,
Sandvik Coromant has launched CoroThread 500, its next-generation solid carbide orbital thread mill for internal threading of blind and through holes.
Designed as a solution for complex threading tasks, CoroThread 500 delivers secure, chatter-free machining in deep threads, long overhangs, difficult materials and unstable setups. The product family succeeds CoroMill Plura R217 and combines high process security with the flexibility to machine a broad range of thread forms, sizes and materials using a single tooling concept.
While reliability remains critical in advanced production, manufacturers across all industries are under pressure to increase productivity while reducing tooling costs, scrap and production interruptions. The need for stable and predictable machining extends across sectors including aerospace, general engineering, automotive, medical and electronics. Manufacturers are increasingly looking for versatile tooling solutions that can deliver consistent performance while simplifying tool inventories and reducing overall cost per component.
To address these challenges, CoroThread 500 combines chatter-free technology in selected variants, hard-substrate grades, advanced geometry and state-of-the-art PVD coatings. Together, these features reduce vibration, improve stability and enable long, predictable tool life even in difficult materials such as titanium and heat-resistant superalloys. An optimised flute count combined with one-pass machining capability also helps manufacturers reduce cycle times and improve productivity.
Niladri Das, product manager at Sandvik Coromant, said: "When you're threading high-value components, reliability is often more important than achieving the highest possible cutting data. A tooling failure late in the manufacturing process can jeopardise hours of previous machining and result in substantial costs. CoroThread 500 was developed to help manufacturers minimise that risk while improving productivity and precision in demanding applications."

In addition to process security, CoroThread 500 offers exceptional versatility. By combining the inherently lower cutting forces of orbital thread milling with an optimised machining strategy, CoroThread 500 delivers stable, predictable threading across a wide range of applications. The solution supports numerous materials, thread forms and sizes, allowing manufacturers to consolidate tooling and increase manufacturing flexibility.
Unlike tapping, CoroThread 500 provides reliable chip control, enables full bottom threads and allows adjustment of machining strategies, thread tolerances and radius compensation. Compared with full-toothed thread mills, it excels in deep threads, difficult-to-reach features and applications involving long overhangs, delivering consistent thread quality.
Cory Carpenter, global product and digital application specialist at Sandvik Coromant, said: "Many manufacturers assume they need separate solutions to achieve both flexibility and process security. What makes CoroThread 500 unique is its ability to deliver both. Manufacturers can use one tooling concept across a wide range of materials and thread forms while maintaining the reliability required for demanding operations."
