New digital reconditioning portal puts customers in controlReconditioning tool box

Metal cutting specialist and manufacturing solutions provider Sandvik Coromant has upgraded its tool reconditioning service for solid round tools. To give manufacturers complete control over their reconditioning process, the upgraded service replaces a previously manual, multi-stage workflow with a streamlined, fully on-line experience that dramatically reduces quotation and turnround times.

Historically, customers requesting tool reconditioning had to rely on a chain of communications between sales teams, distribution centres and reconditioning hubs. Receiving a quotation could take several days, before reconditioning work could begin. Recognising the need for a faster, more transparent process, Sandvik Coromant set out to streamline the customer journey and remove unnecessary steps from the service experience.

A new online portal transforms the process. Customers simply log in, enter the tool’s product code and the quantity they wish to recondition and receive an instant quotation. This enables immediate decision making and places full control in the hands of the user. Furthermore, for the majority of markets, Sandvik Coromant covers all shipping costs, taxes and tariffs associated with the service, ensuring a smooth end-to-end experience. On the platform, users can select their preferred shipping box — either one supplied by Sandvik Coromant or their own packaging — add any order notes and submit the request.

SandvikOnce an order is placed, customers can clearly track the journey. The portal displays which of Sandvik Coromant’s global reconditioning hubs the tools will be sent to and provides direct contact details for the team handling them. Completed orders and historical reconditioning data are stored automatically, giving full transparency for ongoing production planning. Customers can easily keep track of how many times their tools have received a reconditioning service, helping them to better plan their inventory.

Matthew Johnson, product manager – reconditioning at Sandvik Coromant, said: “The goal is a consistent, reliable turnround time of 21 days from the moment the customer hits ‘send order’. Customers benefit from full visibility, faster turnround and complete confidence in the value of reconditioning. It is about putting control back in their hands while ensuring we meet the highest standards in tool renewal.”

Customers can choose to continue reconditioning tools for as long as the tool quality meets their needs. Mr Johnson continued: “While we can guarantee tools can be reconditioned up to three times and maintain 100% of their original performance, we know tools may be reconditioned many more times and still perform exceptionally.”

Reconditioning a tool three times typically delivers at least 50% savings compared with purchasing new tools. The service is paired alongside Sandvik Coromant’s tool recycling programme for when tools reach the end of their lifespan. This combination of transparent, streamlined tool reconditioning and a longstanding buy-back programme enables manufacturers to maximise the value of their tooling while advancing sustainability goals.
