Mapal has introduced the EA-Performance-System, a new fine boring solution that brings single-screw adjustment to bore diameters between 10mm and 19mm, reducing set-up complexity while maintaining high levels of accuracy and process reliability.
The launch marks an expansion of the company's EasyAdjust principle into a diameter range that has traditionally required more complex adjustment procedures. According to Mapal, it is the first time a one-screw setting system has been made available across this challenging size range for a broad spectrum of materials.
Fine boring has long been one of Mapal’s core specialisms. Conventional fine boring tools typically rely on two separate adjustment elements, one for diameter setting and another for cutting-edge taper adjustment. While this approach delivers high precision, it can be time-consuming to set and generally requires considerable operator expertise.
Mapal addressed these challenges with its EasyAdjust-System for diameters above 20mm. By combining diameter adjustment through a single screw with a permanently integrated back taper in a cartridge system, the design significantly reduces setting times, minimises the risk of adjustment errors and maintains consistent dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
The challenge of applying the same principle to diameters between 10mm and 19mm lay in achieving sufficient rigidity and precision within a much smaller package. Stable insert clamping with an integrated back taper places demanding requirements on tool design, manufacturing accuracy and system stability.
To overcome these challenges, Mapal developed a new connection concept between the insert and clamping system. At the centre of the design is a newly developed indexable insert featuring a defined contact geometry. Used in combination with a matching clamping jaw, the arrangement provides repeatable, positive-lock positioning of the cutting insert.
The company says the clamping mechanism transfers adjustment movements precisely while ensuring secure insert retention under machining loads. This helps deliver the accuracy required for high-precision boring operations while simplifying the adjustment process for operators.
According to Mapal, the EA-Performance-System enables micrometre-level diameter setting while offering straightforward handling and high process reliability. The result is reduced correction work, lower scrap rates and more stable production processes.
Typical applications include precision fit and bearing bores found in transmission housings, cylinders, crankshafts and camshafts, where consistent bore quality is critical.
The new system has already been introduced at selected customer sites. Mapal reports that users have confirmed stable setting behaviour and repeatable machining results during ongoing production operations.
