Hufschmied marks 20 years of cutting tool manufacturing

Hufschmied marks 20 years of cutting tool manufacturingGerman cutting tool specialist Hufschmied is celebrating 20 years of in-house manufacturing, marking two decades of growth that have seen annual production rise from just 2,000 tools to around 800,000 tools in 2025.

The company established its own production facility in Winterlingen, in Germany’s Swabian Jura region, in 2006 following the acquisition of a small tool-grinding business operating with just three machines. Since then, the operation has expanded significantly, enabling Hufschmied to develop and manufacture material-specific cutting tools designed to solve complex machining challenges across industries ranging from composites and plastics to graphite and ceramics.

By controlling the entire production chain, from tool design and grinding through to coating and quality assurance, the company says it can tailor tools precisely to customer requirements. This approach has helped drive the development of a range of proprietary tool geometries and machining solutions aimed at improving productivity and process reliability.

The Winterlingen facility today produces both standard and bespoke tools with diameters ranging from 0.05mm to 20mm. Continued investment has expanded capacity beyond the original site, with a second production plant added in Sigmaringen in 2022 and a further facility opened in Mexico in 2025.

Meanwhile, the company’s headquarters in Bobingen near Augsburg houses its technology centre as well as production operations for diamond-coated tools and specialist tooling for dental applications.
Quality assurance has played a major role in the company’s development. Every tool is assigned a unique QR code immediately after the blank is manufactured, allowing complete traceability throughout production. The system links each tool to material batches, manufacturing processes and final inspection data, creating a digital record that can also support tool management and simulation through a digital twin.

Hufschmied has also invested heavily in digital manufacturing technologies. In 2022 the company introduced SonicShark, an innovative process-monitoring system that combines structure-borne sound sensors with artificial intelligence. The technology is designed to identify anomalies during machining operations, detect material inconsistencies and recognise the early signs of tool wear before they affect production quality.

Custom-engineered tooling remains a key part of the business, accounting for around 80% of total output. These solutions are typically developed through detailed process consultations in which tool geometries and machining strategies are adapted to specific materials, components and machine platforms. The company supports this work with a library of approximately 300 standard tool geometries covering applications in steel, aluminium, composites, engineering plastics, non-ferrous metals, graphite and ceramics.

Hufschmeid 1 Alongside manufacturing growth, Hufschmied has increased its focus on sustainability. The company achieved ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification in 2022 and began calculating greenhouse gas emissions associated with tool production in 2024. These figures can be used by customers to support Scope 3 emissions reporting across their supply chains.

The business is also reducing its own environmental impact. A company-owned solar energy system is expected to save approximately 68 tonnes of CO₂ emissions this year.
Managing director Christel Hufschmied highlighted the benefits of controlling every stage of production.

“With our manufacturing process, which covers the entire process chain, we have the freedom to implement innovations and developments quickly. At the same time, our comprehensive quality assurance system gives us the highest level of control,” she said.

She added that the latest investment in planning and production software had further strengthened manufacturing performance.

“Our latest improvement: By introducing planning and control software, we now have full control not only over what we deliver, but also when.”

The company has deployed the HYDRA X Manufacturing Execution System alongside the FEDRA Advanced Planning and Scheduling platform to create a digital link between planning and production. Hufschmied says the systems improve visibility across operations, reduce machine downtime and changeover times, and help maintain high levels of on-time delivery for customers.

Twenty years after entering manufacturing, Hufschmied says its focus remains on combining specialist tooling expertise with innovation, digitalisation and process optimisation to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of modern machining operations.
