Doosan introduces large-capacity VMC

Doosan introduces large-capacity VMC Mills CNC Ltd, Leamington Spa (www.millscnc .co.uk) — the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland — has announced an extension to the latter’s range of DNM vertical machining centres with the recent introduction of the DNM 6700XL, which features a 2.1m X axis.

The XL suffix is an abbreviation for Extra Long (the standard DNM 6700 machine has a 1.3m X axis), as well as a larger work table — 2,200 x 570mm.

Mills CNC says this new machine will appeal to component manufacturers that machine large and long parts, as well as those that want the flexibility to machine multiple ‘smaller’ parts in single set-ups.

It also features a direct-coupled 18.5kW 15,000rev/min spindle as standard, to minimise vibration and reduce noise — particularly during high-speed machining operations.

The spindle has a 20-bar through-spindle coolant capability.

The machine also features Doosan’s proprietary thermal-compensation system, which is designed to “minimise the effects of heat generation and regulate thermal expansion, thereby ensuring high levels of component accuracy and process optimisation”.

The rapid-traverse rate is 36m/min in X and Y, and 30m/min in Z.

Unproductive non-cutting times are further reduced via the machine’s 30-position ATC (up to 40 or 60 position options available), which offers a tool-to-tool exchange time of 1.2sec.

Meanwhile, grease-lubricated axis travels (as opposed to oil lubrication), help to reduce maintenance costs and machine down-time; this also eliminates the need for oil skimmers — and the DNM machine’s grease cartridge systems only need replacing every three months.

Tony Dale, Mills CNC’s technical director, said: “The introduction of the new DNM 6700XL is evidence of Doosan meeting market demand for a large ultra-flexible and high-productivity vertical machining centre.”
