Erowa Robot Compact 150 offers automation and flexibilityNow available from exclusive partners REM Systems Ltd in the UK and Eire, the latest Erowa Robot Compact 150 (ERC 150) brings smart automation to a wide range of production technologies, including turning, milling, grinding, die sinking, wire cut EDM, and even additive manufacturing (AM). Additionally, the ERC 150 enhances testing and inspection operations, ensuring high levels of quality control.

Ian Holbeche, managing director at Worcestershire-based REM Systems, said: “The proven benefits of automation systems in enhancing machine shop efficiency are well-documented. Supported by decades of real-world data from Erowa’s experience with customers across diverse, technically demanding industries, the key advantages include greater flexibility, improved quality, reduced errors, cost savings, and less rew-ork. Automation also supports workforce autonomy, which can boost morale and improve staff retention.”

“However, many smaller manufacturers have previously viewed automation as cost-prohibitive or overly complex. Ian Holbeche continues: “The ERC 150 overcomes these barriers, offering an affordable, user-friendly solution even for small batch production.”

ErowaFeaturing a compact monobloc design that can be positioned close to machine tools, the new EROWA ERC 150 occupies just 4.7m2 of floor space. Despite its small footprint, it can carry up to 150kg and service up to two machines, with an extra-long twin-drive X-axis reaching 1,458mm. Erowa’s innovative design allows for impressive magazine capacity in this small space, with adjustable magazine levels to accommodate various workpiece sizes and types.

The flexible magazine capacity accommodates different pallet sizes, from ITS50 holders to MTS400 pallets, with part heights up to 400mm. The expandable magazines can store over 500 Erowa pallets in different sizes. An optional LS 500 Comfort set-up station ergonomically assists with pallet loading, unloading, and cleaning, helping reduce operator fatigue during setup and ensuring continued robot operation.

For space-saving integration, the optional loading station allows large and heavy workpieces (UPC and MTS pallets) to be positioned at an ergonomic height while the robot operates. A precise indexing system (4x90deg) automatically locks the pallet in place, preventing misplacement.

Additionally, an optional RFID-based EWIS chip identification system enables real-time tracking of pallets and electrode holders within the robot’s magazine, providing seamless process monitoring. The read-head is directly mounted on the axis, and the EROWA process control software provides continuous visibility of process data.

Maximising production uptime

Like all Erowa automation systems, the ERC 150 maximises production uptime, enabling operations during third shifts and weekends. Achieving this requires precise, yet flexible planning, facilitated by the Erowa JMS 4.0 process control software. This system offers a comprehensive and intuitive overview of the entire production process. It integrates all data, managing everything from order lists and priorities to CNC programmes and tool management. Real-time status updates provide instant visibility, allowing users to effortlessly track the current progress and make informed decisions at a glance.

ErowaMr Holbeche added: “In today’s competitive manufacturing landscape, flexibility and automation are essential for boosting efficiency. The ERC 150 delivers both, enabling adaptation to any production environment. Whether serving one or two machine tools operating the same or different manufacturing technologies, its long reach X-axis ensures that the end effector can access the majority of working envelopes.”

The ERC 150’s lean design, which minimises space requirements while maximising magazine capacity, offers a remarkable blend of efficiency and productivity. This automation solution drives competitiveness by reducing costs, increasing output, and offering an exceptional return on investment.

Mr Holbeche concluded: “The ERC 150’s compact size means it can be quickly commissioned and integrated into your workshop. By unlocking all available machining hours, your business can maximise productivity. This durable automation system will provide a sustainable investment that will continue to benefit the future of your manufacturing operations.”

Erowa believes that there are several key stages in the automation process: standardisation; organisation; automation; and integration. Each stage contributes to achieving productivity across the 8,760 hours of the year, ensuring continuous business growth and efficiency.
